Tatura Milk Netball Academy Representatives

As many as five local junior netball players have had their talents and hard work recognised by being selected in AFL Goulburn Murray Tatura Milk Junior Netball Academy squads for 2020.

Quartet Adison Thornberry (Seymour), Sophie Allen (Seymour), Sophie Munro (Trawool) and Ben Morgan (Avenel) have all been selected in the 13-year-old squad, while Olivia Dorria (Seymour) has also been picked up in the 12-year-old squad.

Coaches and selectors were said to be very impressed with the high level of skill and effort demonstrated by all players through trials, which made selection of athletes for the 2020 Academy extremely difficult.

AFL Goulburn Murray Netball Administrator Peita Sleeth said she was excited to see the program’s progression go from strength to strength in 2020.

“The improvements I have seen in netballers that have been through the Academy can be attributed to the hard work our players and coaches put into every session,” Sleeth said.

“Our goal is to create a positive environment that fosters personal development with a group of passionate netballers that are wanting to improve their skills.

“We are privileged to have dedicated coaches working hard to develop a specialised program, with a focus on player improvement and individual skill development.”

Director of coaching Ann Austin will again oversee the program, in conjunction with returning Academy coaches Emma Clignett, and Ash Bradley, as well as skills coach Jacqui Hudgson.

Season 2019 has ended with a great U/14 Football Grandfinal versing the talented Euroa Magpies. The Saints played extremely well to take out the flag and the game could not of been better summarised by the U/14 Team Manager, Mark Manchester:

U14 Grandfinal 18/8/2019
St Mary's 9.3. 57 v Euroa 4.3.27

WE DID IT !!!!!!!!

Well the day arrived and the U14's delivered.
The boys set it up in the 1st quarter, kicking 3 goals into a strong breeze to Euroa's 2 and followed up with another 4 goals to nil in the second. Euroa went defensive in the 3rd quarter which signalled game over as they put their only goal kicking option onto Ollie Munro who had 3 goals up to half time. The silent achiever Cayleb Trodd who gives away inches every week in the ruck kept out jumping the bigger Euroa ruckman and giving the Best and Fairest for the year winner Sammy Thompson and the wounded warrior Fraser Rutherford first option of the ball. Fraser won the award for Best on the Ground and spent the next 4 hours in hospital with a suspected broken wrist. Lewie Lubeck, Benny Lay, Rhys Billen, and Connor Jenkins were winning the ball at ease and kept sending the ball back inside 50 when Euroa were desperatly trying to defend. The backline who have stood up all year and led by their general in Linc Smith and his lieutenants Carter Grant, Izaac Joseph-Hauser, Tyler Ryan, Adam Hanna, Dylan Towt and Nic Wyllie dominated the Euroa forwards and whatever they tried didn't work. Harry Martin and Lukey Allison were creating havoc on the wings and running their opponents off their feet. Big man Jake Best was playing in my opinion his best game for the year and kicked a long long goal into the wind after taking a strong mark. Jake and other big man Rhidian Wilson used their height and size to advantage all day and Euroa had no answer on how to stop them. Braeden Dundon coming off a great game against Tabilk in the Prelim looked dangerous again up forward and was presenting well to the mid field who kept sending the ball inside 50. Little speedster Aiden Gibbons was running his opponent off his feet and his good mate Ronan Sullivan was creating space up forward. Going into the game we had 3 injured boys but we are a team and the rest of the boys and the coaching staff wanted them to have a run on the ground even if it was only briefly. Sammy Manchester playing with a broken rib from the 1st semi against Euroa and Jacob Begley who had a serious motorbike accident 2 weeks early and was battered and bruised got to run on for the last 4 minutes of the game. Jacob was so excited and to see his smile after the game was very rewarding Lachie Canty who was missed for several weeks with a serious foot injury sat on the bench with the boys and was encouraging and cheering his team mates on. Lachie was certainly a part of the team, he may not have got on the ground but he still played his part. After the loss to Euroa in the 1st final the boys seemed to flick a switch, they trained harder, their skill levels finally all clicked together and they were training the house down. If you could have seen the look in their eyes on the last training night you could see we were never going to lose the Grand Final, coaches Thommo and Clayton had the boys at their peak and medico Chris Billen had the boys as healthy as he could. It's been a great team effort and something the boys will never forget, they are now a part of history and mates for life. I'm a very proud dad and team manager today but think i partied a bit to hard with the coaches last night. Hope to see everyone next Saturday night at presentation. This is my last game post for the year........Go Saints.

Commiserations to the gallant U/16 footballers whom were Runners Up in the GF against Broadford.

It was cold and wet conditions that the boys played in, and they never stopped giving it all that they had. Well done Boys! - You nearly snagged a GF from a last quarter comeback, but alas it wasnt to be.

Please congratulate the following boys and girls in representing the SDJFNL at the Carnival on the weekend.

You all did your club very proud!

Saint Mary's Junior Football Netball club is was well represented this year in the Goulburn Murray Youth Football Academy.

The club and committee of SMJFNC is extremely proud to see so many of their young players being part of the academy.

The Youth Academy is an elite football development program, an initiative from AFL Goulburn Murray to assist in the development of players from across the region - that have been identified as outstanding players for their age group in their respective leagues.
In its third year, the academy is a program that facilitates groups in the U13, U14 and U15 age categories for both the Murray Bushrangers and Bendigo Pioneers aligned leagues. The Academy Program consists of training sessions that aim to incorporate training, skill development, game sense, recovery, strength and conditioning, as well as educational sessions to develop young identified players to achieve and be prepared for high level elite football.

U/13s Sam Thomson and Angus Murray were both part of the playing team and were able to win 2/3 games.  Sam received an award for his efforts. Angus put in a solid performance playing exceptional in all 3 games despite the heat.
